NASA project Mercury single-stage launch vehicle (derived from the Redstone ballistic missile) and spacecraft capsule as used to launch America's initial suborbital manned space flights. Model kit features state-of-the-art molding and includes:
booster with stabilizing/control fins and exhaust nozzle,
capsule with crisp engraved surface features,
escape rocket and lattice tower, and
display base with metal mounting post.
Decals and color painting guide are provided for a typical Redstone rocket with capsule legends for 'Liberty Bell 7' and 'Freedom 7'.

Great subject, needs accuracy though...

The Right Stuff in just the right scale. The escape tower looks great. Tricky to assemble though. Assemble first then paint it red. Take your time and be careful when removing parts from the sprue. They're dainty.
Forget trying to paint the white band around the top of the capsule, where the escape tower attaches. Use 1/8" white pactra trim tape. Can't even tell the difference. There are three issues of concern, however:
1) The decal sheet is lacking the "crack" for the Liberty Bell 7. It'll have to be free hand painted on unless there are after-market decals available. Also, the decals have a nice, solid black cylindrical pin stripe for the center of the rocket but not for the smaller cylindrical pin stripe at the top of the rocket, nor for the very fine one at the bottom. To look consistent, they'll have to be painted.
2) The Mercury capsule provided does NOT represent Freedom 7. Go to http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/mercury/mercury_redstone_3/ndxpage7.html and research the photos. Freedom 7 had a round window, not the trapezoidal window of the remaining Mercury flights. There really isn't a way to modify the kit supplied capsule without destroying it I don't think. So the only real option is to model Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell 7.
3) Parts are provided for the retro fire package and the deployed destabilizer, but there's no heat shield included in the kit. Unless it vanished on me, I didn't see it. Doesn't matter though, because you won't be able to use these parts if you're mounting the capsule to the rocket. |
