The early days of the New Republic saw the development of the E-Wing, a more advanced fighter craft to be the successor to the X-wing fighter. The upgraded Mk II’s saw more limited service compared to that of their predecessors but my no means does this mean they were less deadly. The E-Wing Mk II was designed by Brandon Drew as a fighter mod to the game Free Space 2 (known as Fate of the Galaxy).

This multi-media kit includes 13 pieces of solid cast resin parts, 3 vacuformed canopies, ALPS-printed waterslide color decals, and detailed instructions. Finished length is approx. 6 ½”L x 6”W (165mm x 152mm). Pattern master by Nicholas Sagan, produced and cast by .JPG Castings, decals by JTGraphics, canopies by Joe Baxter.

2 Stars Soft detail and miscast parts mar an otherwise high-potential kit
by Carl Croushore from South-Centtral Wisconsin on Mar 8, 2012
I was really looking forward to opening this kit once it arrived. I've always been a big admirer of the starships in Star Wars, and the variations that professional and fan designers have created. I ordered this as an accompaniment to my tri-wing fighter (aka Tie Defender) kit, which I hope to review in the near future. The E-wing, which this kit represents, is a later and alternative variant for the X-wing, and a fine subject choice in my opinion. The kit comes well packaged, with similar parts being separated into different baggies, and/or protectively wrapped. This is a nice touch, especially with resin, as the material can be fragile and unwrapped pieces can (and do) get damaged. No damage was incurred during shipping. Huzzah! This kit has 14 pieces and a decal sheet. The decals have very nice detail, but seemed just a little thick to me. A nice feature of the kit is that it comes with a solid resin canopy as well as a very nice set of vacuum-formed clear canopies. A+ for providing the choice! Upon unwrapping the various pieces, the first thing I noticed was the detail. There is a lot of it, but it is blocky and unfortunately very little of it is crisp. Overall it leaves the impression of being soft, and there isn't a hint of any panel lines. The cockpit pieces actually had the sharpest detail, and for that I was thankful. The lack of crisp edges can be improved with painting techniques, but those techniques should be used to enhance, not create what should already be there. As far as the casting goes, it was hit and miss. Overall there were almost no air bubbles (exception is below) or voids, and there was no warping evident. Those are big plus points for me. The resin itself is ivory colored, clean and easy to "read". The fuselage, pilot, and cockpit pieces were just fine - very little excess with almost no mold seam visible. The wing sections had some minor mold lines to trim, but nothing out of the ordinary. The misses came with the engine housings. The pieces both exhibited heavy seam lines accompanied by some mold shift, as if the mold were clamped too tightly or the mold halves were slightly misaligned. These were also the only pieces that had any air bubbles of note. I'm not sure what went wrong here, but these two important pieces are defective enough for me to want to scratch-build new ones to replace them. Parts fit was quite good. Once trimmed and cleaned, the pieces dry-fit nicely and assembled with little difficulty and only a minor need for filling very narrow gaps. I strongly believe in pinning to reinforce resin models, even smaller ones like this. The material responded well to this process. I also replaced the blaster cannons with similarly scaled steel piano wire and brass tube sleeve-cowlings. I did this not because of any defect, but because the resin here is thin and subject to breaking. Pros: - Interesting and needed subject (Star Wars E-wing) - Well packaged! - Nice resin material with few bubbles and voids. No warping. - Choice of solid resin canopy and clear vacu-formed canopies (for the cockpit detail lovers in all of us). - Good parts fit. Cons: - Soft details; lack of any panel lines. - Poorly cast engine components. - Somewhat thick decals Overall, I'm glad the kit was produced, as the subject fills a void in the genre. The kit also has some really nice builder-friendly features. Unfortunately because of the miscast engines and soft detail, I doubt I would risk additional expenditures of $49.95 to create a squadron.
